the recording sessions for rastrumentals took place over seven years, between são paulo and brixton, but the roots of the project stretch back to the arrival of digistep�s father in 1970s bristol. aged 18 he had almost nothing to his name, apart from his treasured vinyl collection. these records are still in the family, and have been invaluable in shaping dubkasm�s unique sound. rastrumentals combines samba instruments such as the cavaquinho, pandeiro and cuica with the work of some of the uk�s greatest reggae musicians.

the legendary gig that joe strummer, singer from the punk rock band �the clash� attended and inspired his writing their classic �white man in hammersmith palais� took place on the 05th june 1977. at the hammersmith palais venue on shepherd�s bush road w6, london during the height of punk mania. the full line up for the show were all jamaican artists dillinger, leroy smart, delroy wilson (all the first time from jamaica) and ken boothe. �ken boothe for uk pop reggae� who had already scored some hits with �everything i own� and �crying over you� in 1974. joe strummer was expecting roots, rock, reggae but the sound system this evening �admiral ken sound� was playing �four tops all night� as in soul and northern soul that were staple crowd pleasers at the time to warm up the audience, but in joe�s eyes the music should have reflected more jamaican roots based music. the song also deals with bigger issues of black and white unity, but some people including the punk rockers. �they�re all too busy fighting, for a good place under the lighting�. joe strummer himself was looking for fun. �i�m the whiteman in the palais... just looking for fun�.

london artist mal-one has recorded a 7� to celebrate all things punk... name checking many london record stores in this song, with a reggae/dub version on the b-side. the record cover is a collage of a 100 punk singles of all the classics from adam and the ants to x ray spex. his next london punk art exhibtion is in may on piccadilly and inside the shrink wrapped 45 is an invite to the show. mal-one has exhibited along side banksy and peter blake among others. this black vinyl 7� only release of 600 copies.

new blundetto 7inch. the second from his new album �slow dance� . after ken boothe, blundetto invited another legendary jamaican singers : little harry (dancehall figure and burner of dubplates) and cornell campbell (whose reggae falsetto can be heard on island productions from studio one to bunny lee) to add their voices to his burning riddims.

after being in the reggae band the heavymanners (parted in 2009) led by takeshi heavy akimoto, and participating as a supporting member of dry&heavy after which the band reunited with the original rhythm section, sahara (keyboard/programming) and ohkuma, who worked as the drummer of soul dimension, started the dub unit undefined. it is no exaggeration to say they have pushed the variously formatted term of dub to the far shore experimentally and furthermore, liberated the definition of dub to undefined. their debut 7inch vinyl released in march last year from their own label newdubhall is being well received even overseas and in the spring of 2018, this 10inch vinyl new culture days will be out, which will be their second release.

it s been around three years since jpattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of dub and techno. a lot has been happening ever since, and that�s very noticeable on his second album. it still has all the signature elements of jpattersson: there s his dreamy, virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals, there s his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a downbeat rhythm. however, besides his fanfares there s now also many folks, many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. there s a track with berlin mc longfingah, latin-flavoured rhythms from polish reggae and dancehall producer dreadsquad as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years.

joseph white aka joe white is a foundation of jamaican music. he started singing in the late 50 s and did his first recordings for duke reid in the early 60 s. while disco sound was bumping into jamaican people mind, he formed the group roots, trunks & branches to release several tracks on the label splendour heights. �rising / power disco power� is taken from the album the weak will be strong released in 1978. a beautiful extended disco reggae tune mainly played by joe white (drums, piano, vocal). this issue was fully remastered on a disco 45 vinyl record to give respect to the dynamic. on the other side you will get the reggae lovers roots rock tune �ain t no way / the monster�, an extended version with deep dubwise. you ve got it!

tony clarke did his first recording in new york in 1971 at hugh hendricks recording studio called -righteous man- of which he played both bass and lead guitar. tony clarke decided to write the song �going home� to reference the roots of his music. in those days and even now good reggae music that was being recorded in the united states was not receiving the approbation from home because, in jamaica they felt that the best reggae music could only come from and be created in jamaica to substantiate the true feeling of the genre. so he decided to go back to jamaica and record �going home� at harry j studio with sylvan morris as engineer. he also recorded the cover version to �hey little girl� originally done by dee clark. for this 12 vinyl edition, the artwork was done with a vintage photo of tony clarke in front of his house at waterhouse and extended liner notes on the back cover.

die geschichte von -ton steine scherben in dub- begann vor 20 jahren. nach zwei aufsehenerregenden kompilationen des damals noch jungen labels echo beach, die ein schlaglicht auf das britische und internationale dub-schaffen der mittneunziger warfen, sollte sich -king size dub volume 3- auf deutschland konzentrieren. neben den toten hosen, fantastischen vier und nina hagen dachte man dabei auch an die scherben. so kam es zu einem ersten treffen mit r.p.s. lanrue, dem ehemaligen scherbengitarristen und musikalischen nachlassverwalter der band. dadurch landete eine version von -mole hill rockers- auf dem sampler. und dann passierte erst mal nichts mehr. bis labelchef nicolai beverungen zwei seiner dub-spezialisten, nämlich fe wolter (dubvisionist) und alexander hornbach (aldubb), zu einer weiteren zusammenarbeit mit r.p.s. lanrue bewegen konnte. jetzt wurde es konkret. obwohl für die scherbenwerke keine mehrspuraufnahmen vorlagen, gelang es den dub-archäologen, die essenz der stücke in exklusiven mixen zu erhalten. nur punktuell wurden durch overdubs spuren ergänzt, verstärkt oder tiefer gelegt. so entstand, was keiner für möglich gehalten hätte: ein dub-kaleidoskop aus den scherben des westberliner klassenkampfes. die vinyl-lp ist auf 999 nummerierte exemplare limitiert und erscheint inklusive album-cd.

�pat thomas introduces marijata� is a seminal ghanian album that fuses highlife, reggae, folk, funk and soul, from legendary vocalist pat thomas. originally released in 1976 on gapophone records. �marijata� was a group made up of three members � kofi �electric� addison on drums, bob fischlan on organ and nat osmanu on guitar, hailing from ghana. pat thomas career began in 1969 with the �broadway dance band�, leaving a year later to join the �uhuru dance band�. he then played with ebo taylor�s �blue monks� and finally formed the �sweet beans� in 1973 where he really made his name. the group released �false lover� in 1974, split and then reformed as marijata, releasing �marijata� (also available on mr bongo) and this album, �pat thomas introduces marijata�. thomas career spans more than 50 years and he still tours regularly across the world. replica original artwork, official mr bongo reissue. licensed from gapophone records courtesy of george prah.

meditative and off-kilter, dubkasm�s new 12� is, unsurprisingly, completely unlike any other tune out there, and pays tribute to a too-frequently overlooked part of reggae tradition: dub poetry. originating in a collaboration between dubkasm and their long-time friend, norway-dwelling heavyweight bass guitarist, bajan steppa, enter the gates is a discomix built on a tuff bassline, skittering drums and retro synths, and features reflective, courageous lyrics about the enduring power of black liberation movements and consciousness, from gloucester vocalist rider shafique. the b-side contains an upfront instrumental cut, followed, in true dubkasm style, by a collaboration with a musical titan. mad professor�s incredible dub flips the original into a propulsive soundsystem killer, retaining the tune�s heart and spirit, but driving and percussive where the original is deep and soulful. mastered on to 1/2� tape at stardelta studios, and pressed on 180g vinyl.
